Alphonse Karr or Bumbusa multiplex Alp. Karr
This very popular bamboo has bright yellow culm with longitudinal green stripes. Culms are often used in interior decorations. It becomes a dense fence or screen when planted ten feet apart. Pruning the lower branches to chest level reveals the attractive culms.

Arrow or Pseudosasa japonica
The long dark evergreen leaves up to 13" long and 1.75" wide gives it a tropical appearance. Arrow bamboo is an ideal hedge or screen since it spreads rapidly provided you have the space to allow it to spread. Given a chance it will spread about 10' per year. Mowing the new springtime shoots is an easy way to keep it in check. Arrow does well in salt air, wind, sun or shade and is often used as an interior container plant. The stem(called a culm) is unusually straight which explains why the ancient Samuri used it for their arrow shafts hence the name Arrow bamboo. Our low price makes this an excellent value if you want a running bamboo.

Black or Phyllostachys nigra
Attractive black stems make this a very popular bamboo. The springtime shoots turn black in six months. The late midspring shoots are edible. In colder climates this bamboo grows to a larger height and diameter. The black stems are often seen in interior decorations. It can be a dramatic patio or pool side container plant. In the ground this bamboo will spread a good six feet per year.

Buddha's Belly or Bambusa ventricosa
This large popular clumping bamboo swells at the internodes when given dry conditions or poor care. Often Buddha Belly is grown in containers to achieve the swollen internode effect. In the ground it is a large beautiful landscape element with occasional swollen internodes. The culms are especially thick and strong making them useful for many things. Although this is a clumping bamboo it is not recommended for smaller city properties due to the eventual large mature size. The culms arch and sprawl out the first few years but become more erect with age.  Leaves may drop and damage occur below 15 F. Edible.

David Bissettii or Phyllostachys bissettii
This is a hardy vigorous running bamboo quick to fill in a space. Strong close growing culms make this a good barrier or screen if enough space is available or an underground barrier is in place. I mow the new shoots to keep it where I want it. Usually this is the first to develop new shoots in the spring. This does well in containers. The extra cold hardiness makes this a possible north cottage plant.

Dwarf or Okame-Zasa-Shibataea Kumasasa
Moderate grower perfect for a low hedge that won't get too high in a shade area. Because of the small size it would do well in a pot or container in the house or a shady location. Leaf burn occurs in strong sun. It does best in an acidic soil. Zone 7-10.

Slow Runner

Partly Shade to Sun

Green Onion or Pseudosasa japonica tsutsumiana
Green culms with swelling above the nodes that appear like scallions give this bamboo it's name. It is often a conversation piece when viewed for the first time which makes it an excellent choice as a container plant near or in the house. Outside this could be a moderate height hedge to shield an unwanted view. Slower growing and spreading than most running bamboo allow for less control of underground rhizomes.

Fishpole or Phyllostachys aurea
Yes, it was and still is used for fishpoles. The wood is unusually strong even for a bamboo. Fishpole is a good screen or tall hedge provided space is available to mow down stray shoots popping up here and there. This fairly drought resistant fast spreading bamboo makes it a common choice for reclaiming land or erosion control. Also good in containers. The distorted nodes makes this popular in craft projects.

Hedge or Bambusa multiplex hedge
This versatile fast growing evergreen clumping bamboo makes it suitable for many situations ranging from a tall green hedge, erosion control, crime prevention screen(can't get throught it), sunny or shady locations, and dry or wet areas. It does well in containers or tubs. Mature clumps of this or any bamboo are a haven for birds which find shelter from wind, cold and predators. Hedge bamboo is my recommendation for solving an unpleasant view. Our low price makes this an excellent value. I use stem dried stem sections for kindling wood when starting fires in our fireplace.  Available in $50 and $150 sizes (pick up only for these larger containers).

Aggressive Runner

Partly Sun to Sun

Red Margined or Phyllostachys rubromarginata
This fast spreading, rapid increasing tall bamboo is often used to reclaim poor land. It provides a good screen or windbreak. The culms become yellow/gray with a faint red tint at the margins. One of the best bamboos for wood quality. The culms are straight, long, and with little taper. Shoots are edible. An Alabama Agricultural research station reported Red Margined bamboo to be THE largest producer of wood per acre. Be aware that this is indeed an aggressive spreader which can be desirable or not depending on your needs. The large strong stems are useful as garden stakes or poles, elements of an outdoor garden structure, shepherd's pipes, basket material, and many other uses. Our low price makes this a good value.

Midori Green or Bambusa Multiplex Midori Green, Green Alphouse
This erect fast growing clumping bamboo forms a 15-20 foot wall.  The culms start as a yellow green striped / darker green.  In time the culms become light yellow.  Many refer this as a short version of Alphouse Karr, hence the common name green Alphouse.  An excellent choice for a screening bamboo if overhead wires are a concern.

Because of a limited supply some bamboo are not fully described on this website. Garden visitors can see and
purchase them if so desired. A brief description follows:

Fernleaf Medium size clumping bamboo distinguished by the numerous small fern like leaves. The size ranges form 10-15 feet depending on conditions. Easily tolerates 15 degrees F at our location. Prefers half day sun or less. Price $30.

Kimmei A close cousin to Buddha's Belly but with zigzag culms. Big!

Oldhamii A huge clumping bamboo with 4" thick culms. Extremely popular and impressive. Edible shoots.  This bamboo is often seen in public gardens because it is so attractive and magnificent. Numerous 15 degree F nights gave a new plant a slight frost burn. More mature plants seem unaffected by these temperatures. Prefers sun but does well for us in half day sun. Grows to 55 feet with 4" diameter culms that grow erect with relatively short branches. The leaves are rather wide.
Available in the Fall of 2004 for $60.

Pygmy bamboo Grows about six inches high looking much like a grass. It spreads but is a so-so ground Cover unless you give it care. We have one in a large cement pot in a shaded area with oriental accent pieces
in it which draws much favorable comment.

Pygmy bamboo variegated Very much like pygmy above except it seems to be a bit larger.

Textilis A 50' clumping bamboo also called Weavers Bamboo. Used extensively in China for baskets, mats, garden poles, rope, hats, and fences. Propagation is difficult explaining the short supply.

A few final thoughts on bamboo. Bamboo is the ultimate renewable resource maturing to full stature in years versus decades for a tree. Thousands of uses have been found for bamboo. Most new shoots can be eaten if soaked and properly prepared. Need a high quality tomato support? Prune out a culm and shove it deep in the ground leaving on one third of the length of each lateral branch. A tomato plant likes to climb up supporting itself on the branches. Compost everything when the season is over. Concerned about global warming? Plant a bamboo which will grow faster than almost anything consuming green house gases in the process. Want a dramatic landscape effect but don't want to wait forever for a tree to mature. Bamboo gets you there faster.
